SUALKUCHI : ‘Okonir Buranji Mel’- a children’s history meet on the topic of ‘Bhagadatta, King of Kamrup’ was organised by ‘Pohar Vidyalaya’ under the aegis of Paresh Baishya Foundation, a trust for the upliftment of education at Sualkuchi Sanatan Balika Prathamik Vidyalaya on May 20,2023.
Inaugurating the event prominent educationist and managing trustee Paresh Baishya said “Bhagadatta was unmatched in Elephant Warfare by anyone not only in India but in the world itself. During the battle of the Mahabharata, Lord Krishna frankly admitted this to Arjuna.” He added that Bhagadatta and his elephant Supratik wrecked havoc in the Pandava Camp during the Mahabharata. It was only by the thirteenth day of Kurukshetra War that Arjuna was able to kill Bhagadatta that too with the special blessings of Lord Krishna.
It is here to mention Bhagadatta who belonged to Pragjyotisha sided with the Kauravas since his daughter Bhanumati was married to Duryodhana. This is one of the most finest examples of the glorious history of Assam.
The students who participated as discussants in the history meet too highlighted how King Bhagadatta of Pragajyotisha built the Dighalipukhuri in Guwahati during the Swayamvar of his daughter Bhanumati and how he bravely defeated Bhima, Yudhisthira, Ghatotkacha, Matsyapati Virata etc. in the Mahabharata.Later, several students of the school performed a short play based on the life of Bhagadatta.
The event was attended by students, teachers, office bearers of the management committee of the school and a large number of parents.
According to managing Trustee Paresh Baishya, the foundation is planning to implement this program in 100 schools across Assam with the aim of awakening history consciousness and revisiting the glorious past of the state of Assam among the students.
